Choosing to Be Empowered or Unaware?
This will be a total transparency blog for me!
Recently, my husband had to travel for work and I found myself being “single” again for a week at a time on two separate occasions. Now understand, this has not been my reality for over 6 years and I have a very attentive husband who takes care of ALL the maintenance around our home.
Oh No #1
During week 1, sink clog! I found the plunger and did what I had seen him do but to no avail. When I turned on the garbage disposal, all it did was spin the water. So, I called him…he instructed me to turn the blades of the garbage disposal manually with a wooden broom handle. If I did that, the clog would go down.
The blades were not the problem.
Long story short, I put him on FaceTime and I was successful in holding the drain of one sink and plunging the other side.
Oh No #2
That very night, around 2 AM, the smoke alarm began to beep. Not having the energy to deal with it then, I wrestled through sleep until morning. Of course, I thought that it was a battery but what I found was this detector did not have a battery. Getting the step stool, I unhooked the wires AND it continued to beep!
Being empowered
My next strategy was Google. In my research I found out that our smoke detectors were out of date and unsafe. It also recommended that I detach all of the detectors because of joint wiring. But even with my work of unhooking the wires, the beeping did not stop.
Unknowingly, there was a carbon monoxide detector on the wall beside the smoke detector! That was chirping! After replacing the battery, the chirping stopped. Victory!!!
The choice to make:
But here’s the lesson in it for me. I had made a choice to stay unaware and allow my husband to handle all of the details regarding our home. Truth is…I could have been dead. Carbon monoxide detectors go off for a reason and that gas is undetectable. Innocently, I didn’t even know we had a detector. As a woman, I’m now more committed than ever to at least be aware of home maintenance details, even if I don’t take care of everything myself.
How about you?
