The Secret to Overcoming Comparison

It’s the plague that every woman I know falls into, looking around and assessing every negative aspect of our lives. Not only do we waste brain space here, but we then compare these aspects to the observable and superficial details of the other women around us. And boy, can we make up stories!

Never-ending list

The list of comparable criteria can be endless! We have an imaginary meter that collects points in a variety of categories.

  • The mom points are all about our kid’s behavior, their manners and their success in school, how clean they are…
  • The successful business woman points accumulate in salaries, number of people on our team, awards we earn, speaking engagements we rock….
  • The perfect body points start adding up with the number of workouts we squeeze in, the pounds that we lose, and the “clean” food that we eat, and totally put together outfits that we wear.
  • Forgot to mention the “house” points! Things like organization, cleanliness, stocked pantries, decorated the latest trends and even the size show up in this category.

The Secret:

Here’s what I know to be true! At almost 57 years old, I have experienced and grieved over comparison a time or two (or a hundred). Our society’s standards are subjective and fluid. We can’t keep up. I have had to renew my mind again and again and again with the knowledge that Jesus accepts me just as much as He accepts you. He doesn’t hold any of us at arm’s length, waiting for someone better to come along. He makes us into the person that He thinks we should be. The person who fits exactly in the spot He created us to fill.

Ta-dah! No more comparison needed!
