Cheryl Hansen: My Teaching Background

I started teaching and coaching in the classroom. My genius was in working with kids with learning differences in a therapy situation for over 20 years. I knew a thing or two about stress, these kids had the most academic problems, the most behavior problems and the most hard to handle parents.

My Students

My favorite claim to fame story involves a set of twins named Britney an Bethany, that came to me as 3rd graders, unable to read well, spell and even carry on a conversation that wasn’t random and hard to understand.

After 4 years of therapy, they both were reading on grade level, had honor roll report cards and confidence to match. They went on to high school to be high achievers…one was president of the student council.

Their success

Late one night, I got a call from their sister wanting my help to nominate them for Oprah’s Wildest Dreams show. Both of them wanted to go to college but their parents were unable to financially support them. (Remember, these are the kids that usually flunk out of every class!)

The application was accepted and Oprah’s crew flew to Lincoln, NE to tape segments of the story. The worst part was that we had to keep it a secret from November to May or the whole thing was off!

I’ll never forget the day that Clay Aiken got out of that big purple bus at their high school and they were called to the Commons. The girls were shocked out of their minds to be told that they would be flown to Chicago to be ON the Oprah show.

A couple of weeks later, Oprah totally surprised them by sharing their story with the world and taking them outside to hear the Baylor marching band. They were awarded full ride scholarships to the university and to top it off, Ty Pennington from Extreme Makeover, showed up with two bedrooms full of furniture to be used for college. AT&T gave then cell phone usage for their college careers.

I had invested 4 years of my time, energy, and prayers and not a minute wasted, to see their success. I have the same commitment to my clients today! Their success is my success!
